LANSING – State Representative George Cushingberry Jr. (D-Detroit) recently announced his plan to require those with power of attorney for seniors register to with the county probate court.
"As it stands, our seniors aren't adequately protected from those who would take advantage of them," Cushingberry said. "It is up to the Legislature and the courts to add more oversight to the power of attorney proceedings, which will protect our seniors from financial exploitation and other dangers."
Cushingberry's plan would require those with powers of attorney for individuals over 60 or vulnerable adults to register with their county's probate court, a move that will help ensure those residents are not taken advantage of financially.
"A number of our community's seniors and vulnerable adults are looking for help," Cushingberry said. "Unfortunately, some of the people who volunteer to help these individuals don't necessarily have the best interests of our seniors in mind. My plan to require registration with the probate courts will reduce the number of seniors who are exploited, and will deter anyone who thinks about taking advantage of our most vulnerable residents."
