LANSING - State Representatives Marsha Cheeks (D-Detroit), George Cushingberry (D-Detroit) and Virgil Smith (D-Detroit) today announced $800,000 in road projects and improvements slated for 2006 and 2007 in Wayne County as part of Governor Jennifer M. Granholm's Jobs Today initiative.
"This is a much-needed plan for our community," said Cheeks. "Not only will our roads be improved, but the people in our community will have a chance to get back into the workforce."
The project slated for Wayne County is an $800,000 repair on Highway M-10, also known as the Lodge. The repair will take place on the Highway M-10 corridor from I-696 to downtown Detroit.
Granholm today said that the State of Michigan will accelerate $618 million in spending for critical road and bridge projects across the state. The investment will fund 158 Greenlight Projects over the next two years in 59 counties and support more than 11,000 jobs. The Greenlight Projects represent more than 600 lane-miles, 42 bridges and six capacity improvement projects such as new road construction and lane expansion. The accelerated projects are in addition to the Michigan Department of Transportation's announced road and bridge investment levels for the next five years.
"This plan will give our economy the boost that it needs," Cushingberry said. "People need jobs and this gives our Detroit residents a chance to work on these projects. I'm excited about the announcement. This is good news for Wayne County and Detroit."
"This is the kind of investment Detroit, Wayne County and our state needs," Smith said. "If we want people to work, we have to give them the opportunity to work. This plan does just that. It provides opportunities for our residents."
